    Take 10. Take 20. Has like a 1/2 paragraph section in 3.5. so IF everything has a difficulty, unless your character is pressed for time, they can take 10. Minor failures allowed? Take 20. Your dc 15 check is passed by most competent players if they are good at it. Taking 20 means that you may fail picking a lock a few times, but if there is no other security measure to alert others of the failure, it just takes extra time. I think it MIGHT be an optional rule in 3.5. but in starfinder its something that is a rule itself, tho dm may veto it

    "Toxic" this "toxic" that. Are we going to define 'toxic', or just is it interchangeably with slurs while pretending we're better people for saying it instead?

      Toxic - anything that makes the environment unbearable. It's not a slur. Saying that a dipshit that's constantly in conflict with everybody else and doesn't attempt to improve themselves and stop is making the environment unbearable for said everybody is not an insult, it's a fact.

    Good = behavior motivated by a desire to alleviate suffering. Evil = behavior motivated by a desire to inflict suffering. Lawful = behavior that demonstrates voluntary sacrifice of self-interest per a moral duty. Chaotic = behavior that demonstrates devotion to individual autonomy above all other considerations.

    Going past 10th gets really tough to keep your players on course with a adventure module because players get to powerful with to many options. Past 16th players are almost gods that can railroad or derail a campaign in seconds with out even trying. Even when you meta game in a positive manner to stay on the rail road you’ll detail the campaign off the cliff

    Matt, I know it has been an age since this series came out, but I felt I had to comment. I am sorry that comments for the previous video had to be turned off. As a white, middle aged, straight, western european male I wanted to say your previous video brought me to tears. Thank you for being the voice for reasonable, empathetic and most importantly genuine human beings put there. I applaud you for what you have done for this past time and I hope you have found happiness and joy bringing those exact same things to everyone you have encounter in the world. Bravo. You are an inspiration.

    You're really thinking about this too hard. 5e's design principle is simplicity. If you do an entire new weapon category with it's own separate set of rules, they become a drag. The best way to make guns into D&D is treat them just as weapons. A firearm doesn't really do that much more damage than a crossbow realistically in most contexts. Pistols are harder-hitting hand crossbows, rifles are to crossbows what a greatsword is to a longsword etc. Make them ranged martial weapons and handle proficiency that way. You can add the Loading (can only shoot once per turn) or Reloading (can reload as an action or bonus action) properties for good measure. Anything else should be optional, or treated as magical items.

    I'm building a space setting and in the belt there is a old military power, a medium military power and between them a young economic power whose hearts have been seized by a utopian dream. Recent events have revealed the weakness of the old military, but the question remains of who attacks? why? when? with what allies? It's a wonderfully tense situation and one whose resolution forever changes the system. Only some in the system even realise this.

    I used this in a pirate themed campaign for running naval combat and it turned out pretty fun. Explained to them that there are various duties on the ship that help with maneuvering the ship. Each character could attempt to complete one of those tasks to help the helmsman maneuver into a better position. It was also kind of an opposed skill challenge, because it was also against the maneuver check for the enemy ship. If the heroes won they were able to maneuver into a more advantageous position and had bonuses to their attacks with the cannons. If it was a tie there was no change and if the enemy ship won the advantage shifter the other way. Two advantages in a row and the other ship wasn’t in a position to fire on them at all. It was pretty fun and made the combat very dynamic, way more interesting than two ships lined up on a grid trading broadside attacks 😂

    I love having a player describe how their character would attempt something, or how that skill could help in that situation. I believe it makes them feel more involved and more invested in what’s going on.

    I try not to be an edition warrior, my first edition was 5e but it wasn't my first ttrpg. I do find some games more fun. For example, I like Castles & Crusades and it is essentially just a different version of DnD. I liked AD&D, 3e and 4e have some mechanics I like but the whole systems don't appeal much to me, and 5e feels like a superhero game (I know I can change this as a DM but when I keep someone level 3 or above in 5e I feel like I was trying to) but it easy to play. Well C&C feels like AD&D but is smooth like 5e (though is 10 years older, thanks for 3e streamlining that they take without getting bogged down in rules and rules and rules like 3e) it's my favorite for that. They don't get the new edition hype, but they do new printings and I guess the newest printing is sans the OGL, so maybe that's a sort of new edition.

    • @LiamsLyceum
      @LiamsLyceum 4 дні тому

      Not to say C&C is inherently better, it is just what I like. And as a Forgotten Realms fan, 4e kinda deserves some of the hate XD. I didn't know about WoW, and I'm sad Dragon Magazine got axed, so sad. I played Pathfinder before DnD and wasn't a big fan!

  • @scottharrop6720
    @scottharrop6720 4 дні тому

    I started with 2nd Edition. I had the core books. Played for a few years. Then, I forgot about the hobby. I wasn't around for either 3rd or 4th edition. Every now and then, I'd feel an urge to play. Yet, I no longer had any books and knew no one else who was playing. It was by coincidence that I had a few extra dollars a few years ago and 5E just so happened to be the current edition. So, that's what I bought. I never even heard of CR until after I was looking at ways you could play online. At that point of time, I had purchased Talespire and was looking for videos of people using it for real games.

  • @aban2642
    @aban2642 4 дні тому

    Wow, this just changed my whole perspective on the hobby. I've been trying to make big adventures work for years, and rarely finished them. The few times I did it was awesome at the time, but now I look back on those times and think "I wish my adventures were as awesome as that", or something along those lines. It had become a sad sort of nostalgia, and I've been losing hope that I would ever experience accomplishing something great in any TTRPG again. Thanks @mcolville for giving me hope for my favorite hobby again. I will be sending this to the people I play with.

    From the OSR perspective, the increase in chance-dependent results of battle could give you options to make players think about the conduct of their opponent. Perhaps take more caution around opponents who will give no mercy. Also consider giving your players controllable pets and familiars if you want to buff them. If we're talking 5th edition, a level 1 hero, a warhorse steed, and a mastiff hound companion is probably on par with the power levels of some level 1 parties

    My players were heroes in greek myth send by some of the gods, but they thought about changing sides and asked what would happen. The answer was that the same gods would send other heroes as their antagonists with assistance of some of their allies. They decided to stay heroes, but it would have been fun either way we all thought.

    I rarely run these premade campaigns, the 5e ones being too large, my favorite there being Lost Mines of Phandelver, notice the size? White Plume Mountain, Storm Over Neverwinter, etc and most of the old modules and the size from many other TTRPGs still.

    Bombadil serves at least 2 purposes. First, that the world is a fantastical place once we leave our safe space. Second, not everyone is susceptible to evil. Some just have a natural resistance. Also, Tom gave Merry the blade of Westernesse without which the Witch King could not have been destroyed.

    This is an old video but something you mentioed in it is an issue that I've been having recently. You mentioned how you didn't like to tell the playters what their options were, since it kinda minimized their agency. I completely agree with this, but currently my brother who is playing in my first ever campaign has been asking me to make it more clear about what the players can do in a given scenario. I really don't like to say 'I think you options are probably a, b, and c' because if there was an option d I didn't account for, it's now never gonna happen because I've given them their options now. How do I get better about getting the players to think of their own choices rather than thinking about 'options' I'm giving them as a DM.
